postheadericon Tournament Poker Formula: When To Rebuy

The decision whether to spend more money to rebuy and continue in a poker tournament is a hard one. When deciding to do so, you have to first ask yourself if it will be in your best interests to rebuy. And if you decide to, you have to ask yourself how many times will you do it?

Well first of all, you have to know what a rebuy is. A rebuy is a type of poker tournament where players are allowed to pay more money to add chips to their stack. They can do this when they bust out or even when they are still in the game. This is only allowed during the rebuy time though so the players cannot do this until the end of the tournament.

The positive thing about this is that the pot size increases greatly due to the players who keep on adding chips to the pot. If you are already ahead and do not need to rebuy, this should not affect you too much. The fact that your skill has put you in front of players who need to pay their way back in the tournament will probably mean that you will still be good enough to stay in front of them.

Rebuys usually come in the form of single, limited or unlimited rebuys and are usually used to add to your stack or to let you get back in after you have dropped out.

If you are deciding whether you should buy in or not you need to consider the following factors.

1. The overall skill of the players in the tournament.

When you were still playing, were you one of the better players in the tournament? Were you somewhere in the middle? Or were you struggling to make moves around better players?

2. Can you keep up in terms of chip count?

You have to look at the blinds. If they already are too big then chances are you will just get blinded out. In this case, rebuying into the tourney will just be a bad decision.

3. Do you still feel like playing?

Defeat can sometimes discourage even the most experienced of players. If this is the case with you, then it is a better strategy to give up for the moment and reevaluate your game for the future.

Poker players generally play differently in rebuy tournaments than in freeze-out tournaments. The ability to get back makes them play more aggressively resulting in more all-ins early in the game. This often results in some players being able to amass a huge stack that puts them comfortably ahead of the rest.

The thing you will have to consider most in rebuying though will have to be value. If you expect a positive value in it, then it is generally considered a good idea.
